Utility Management and Consultancy (UMC) Department

The Utility Management Consultancy (UMC) comprises two key business sections: Consultancy Services and Meter Central Laboratory.

The primary mandate of UMC is to support Kenya Power's revenue diversification strategy by developing and delivering value-added services to both internal and external customers.

Consultancy Services — Specialized technical and advisory services for internal and external customers.

Meter Central Laboratory — KENAS-accredited testing and calibration laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Consultancy Services

  • Sensitizing large power consumers on energy efficiency and energy management practices.
  • Supporting the Government and other agencies in the implementation of energy conservation initiatives and projects.
  • Promoting electric cooking (e-cooking) solutions as part of the clean energy transition agenda.
  • Implementing proof-of-concept initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and innovation.
  • Overseeing the implementation and operationalization of the Utility-Run Super ESCO model.

Meter Central Laboratory

Technical Testing and Calibration — Carry out tests and calibration of energy meters, measuring instruments, CTs and VTs and other power system equipment using approved methods and procedures.

Measurement Traceability — Maintain metrological traceability of all measurements to national and international standards, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and global acceptance of the laboratory's test and calibration results.

Quality Management — Implement and maintain a Quality Management System compliant with ISO/IEC 17025:2017; control laboratory documents, records and quality procedures; conduct internal audits and management reviews; and maintain compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.

Equipment Management — Maintain an inventory of laboratory equipment, schedule preventive maintenance and calibration of test equipment, and verify equipment performance before use.

Competence Management — Ensure laboratory personnel are adequately trained and competent, and that only authorized and qualified personnel perform specific tests and calibrations.

Revenue Protection Support — Conduct testing and investigation of energy meters involved in billing disputes and suspected tampering cases, and provide independent technical verification to support fair and transparent dispute resolution.
